It is Still Tough
Fishing on the Esks with no rain to speak of and not much for the coming weeks has been a very hard slog to say the least with nothing caught last week, there are fish in the river they just do not want to play ball. Still a small rise, I mean small! at the beginning of the week has spured a few fish to move a little. It might just be enough for some anglers to catch this week, fingers crossed.
Grilse
I have heard reports that a few grilse have been spotted on the lower beats of the Esks, so if you are thinking of fishing head down to the lower river when the water is this low.
Saprolegnia
This so far has not been as bad as last year so lets hope that is stays this way, not very pleasant seeing beautiful dying salmon every where.
The Week Ahead.
This is pretty much the same as last week, small rods and small flies and keep your wading to the absolute minimum. So in these conditions try a hitch fly with a small fly on the point such as a stoat tail or any thing simlar. In the slower and slacker pools try “backing up”, start at the tail of the pool and cast square across the pool and then take a few steps up stream and hand line as to give your fly some movement, then repeat working your way UP the pool.
