The Nights
Are drawing in now fairly quickly with the sun dipping behind the hills at about 8.15pm, so with that the evenings fishing for sea trout have all but finished. That being said there are still some large sea trout about with a 6lbs caught at Inshewan, South Esk. I have heard on the jungle drums that there are quite a few large sea trout being seen, in the 10lbs bracket. Sea trout certainly seem to be having a good year on the Esk’s. Last week was not as busy on the river as the previous . The lower beats on the North Esk as one would expect faired better than most, Kinnaber had 6 salmon/grilse and Morphie 7 grilse and 7 sea trout.The South Esk benefited from a small rise of water in the middle of the week and the fish are pushing on up. kinnaird was still catching fish though none as big as they had last week. Finavon Castle Water had 5 salmon and 2 sea trout for the week. Inshewan had 4 grilse and 4 sea trout, the have some very good holding pools so a good place for fish to stop for a while before heading up river. Cortachy is starting to catch a few fish with 1 grilse this week and last week 3 salmon two at 11 & 12 lbs, 2 grilse and 6 sea trout up to 6lbs. So it seems that with even a little rise the fish are heading up river.
Week Ahead
Looking at the forecast for Clova and Tarfside we are in for a wet week, well lets hope it comes to something. If this is the case then slightly bigger flies will be needed depending on the water hight. I always feel that the colour of the fly should match the season, so reds orange and anything in between. Also as I mentioned last week cooper is a great colour at this time of year if the water is a little coloured. Still there could be warmer days so back to the full floater and small flies. As the season changes as do the tactics and they can change very quickly, so be prepared.
