The Rivers

Have been quiet again twith a lift in the middle of the week, South Esk coming up to just over 2ft and the North Esk 1ft6″ this no doubt would have moved fish on up the river and over the Loups on the North Esk. Canterland had simlar week last week with 6 salmon up to 12lbs and 5 sea trout up to a very respeciable 4lbs. There are some big fish coming of both of the rivers with two 20lbs salmon coming from the North Esk. One from Balmakewan caught by Stevie McGregor that was thought to be bigger when first took the fly, lucky this one did not get away as those that do tend to be the biggest, we have all told that tale? still what a lovely fish and quite possibly the fish of a life time . The second 20lb salmon was from across the river at Pert out of the Luther Pool. Mr Eyre who had come up all the way from Fulham London well worth the trip for a 20lb salmon. Well done to both of those anglers. A few sea trout still being caught which is lovely to see and hopefully this will bode well for thier future. The South Esk beats that send in thier returns are still doing well with Finavon Castle Water coming out on top again with 9 salmon and a hand full of sea trout for thier week. Inshewan had 6 salmon for thier week with fish being caught in the middle and end. Glen Clova Hotel I am please to report have caught two salmon last week, so hopefull more to come.

Week Ahead

It still feels to warm for the time of year but there is a cooler feeling in the mornings. The water tempertures are still cool enough and will no doubt keep falling alittle. High wind are forecast in the not to distant future this will bring with it a mass of leaves in the rivers. Here is a top tip, turn your doubles upside down so the point is coved by the wing of the fly, this will help a small amount to catching leaves rather that salmon. It seems on the rivers that most now are using fast sink tips to get the flies down and to help combat faster flows, as what fly to put on the end ? Well here are some suggestions. Red Francis, Temple Dogs, Pot Belly Pigs. Also just because they are not the in fly at the moment traditional brass and copper tube flies dressed in the usual colours for time of year will work very well, plus they will get down quickly.

Lastly I should say thank you to the ghillies and guests who send the photographs to me, with out them the report would not be complete and certainly not as colourful!!
