There..

.. Are still quite a few sea trout being caught which is always lovely to here, the grisle are still thin on the ground even though there are quite a few being caught nowhere near the number that should be at this time of year. The summer salmon that are coming into the rivers seem to be in very good health and some good sizes being caught. Still no reports of any pink salmon being caught on the Esks, they have been seen in the middle of the North Esk and none so far on the South Esk. I am sure you have heard that Northern Norway has be catching vast numbers, thankfully the numbers that were suppose to arrive never did.  Saturday 29th was a wash out for most with heavy rain making both rivers unfishable, this in turn was I think good news for the rivers as they had two days of rest and the follow week beginning 31st turned out to be a very good week. A lot of salmon could be seen moving at the start of the and the catches when compared to the previous were proof of this. There were also a lot of fish lost and if they had all stuck there would be a lot of happy anglers. On the topic of the above both salmon and sea trout are still coming short and not taking the fly with gusto, maybe this has something to do with the unsettled weather that we have be having, fairly cool in the evening with the weather coming from the east it does tend to slow life down a little.

Week Ahead

With Warmer, wetter and thunder towards the end of this week coming in from the west should spice things up a bit. Full floaters with changeable tips to keep up with the river levels, small skinny flies again in any pattern that you have confidence in. Hitches and sunrays fished across glassy glides and the good grilse holding lies should prove to be just the thing. Also try a dry fly in the shape of a bomber, or any very large heavily dressed deer hair dry fly. Cover every likely lie, grilse and salmon with take up some pretty odd places so think outside the box and never be put off for following your gut or trying something new, you never know!
