Springers

Are starting to show up a little more now, with the rise in water it has spured the fish on. It was great to hear that two beats on the North Esk, Gallery and Canterland got of the mark last week. Gallery had three springers up to 10lbs, Canterland with two up to 10lb. Pert had a very good week last week with ten springers all coming to the fly and the largest caught by Mr G Luke on a Yellow tube fly. Across the river at Inglismaldie Andy Barrowmen had three springers, all falling to the Ross MacDonald Banana Fly. At Stracathro a team from Finnland lead by Jouni Rauha had two springers for their week. These gentleman have been coming  to fish at Stracathro for some years, generaly they have a little more luck. Moving up river to Edzel (Dalhousie Estates) it was reported that three springers were caught on the weekend.

Well the big news is that some fish have been caught on the South Esk one at Lower Justinhaugh at about the 9lb mark. Then a big springer in anyones book came from Inshewan at 26lbs caught by John Mitchell on a Posh Cascade. It is worth noting here that it is assumed that the salmon will not pass the fish lader at Kinnaird if the water is cold. Keeping in mind that the water in the last couple of weeks has been cold 3c on average , low and clear. So I think we can throw that myth out the window, if salmon want to move they will.

Week Ahead

The rivers have been looking good this week, with rain forecast and warmer weather it is shaping up to be a good week.  That being said there is alot of water in the rivers today North Esk 2’8″ at Logie Mill, South Esk 2’10 at Brechin both on the rise. Once this all starts to drop time to make hay!! Sink tips depending on the water,  flies well you could try a Posh Cascade the big fish seem to like them? Also try the Ross MacDonld Banana fly a great colour for almost all water conditions. I know I keep banging on about it, check the water temperture is does make a differance to how you approach the river.
