Water plus
Unseasonabley warm weather was making fishing alittle more tricky last week. With high water on Monday after the weekend and finally dropping the Tuesday or Wednesday depending on where you were. Most of the fish as you would expect where caught on the droppping water. 5 sea trout at Balmakewan where caught on a sunray, the type of fishing and fish one would find in the summer months not middle of October! Canterland had a good salmon on the Thursday at 22lbs caught again on a Red Francis. The next biggest fish came from Finavon Castle Water at 20lbs, the South Esk has recorded some big fish this year. Just alittle further up river at Inshewan Carol MacBain had a 17lbs salmon on a size 10 Park Shrimp from the Lushet pool. I think over all given the ups and downs of the river levels last week, not a bad week with anglers combating big water and leaves.
Note: If any of the angling clubs or anyone else that has anything to report on the North or South Esk please get in touch via email with your catches and stories. The more we can show what is being caught on our rivers paints a good picture.
Thank you.
Week Ahead
With more heavy rain on the cards and at the time of writing the North Esk at Edzell is 4ft 8″ and rising the South Esk at Brechin is 4ft 1″ and rising it does not bode well for the last few day, but fantastic for the fish to get them where they need to go. As for fishing, fish the margins just of the main currents where the water will be slacker in bigger water. Flies pretty much the same as last week with red again being the predominant colour, the Red Francis seems to be the the fly of the month. Being so warm for the time of year maybe fish smaller than you usally would, again read the water when you arrive also do not be afraid to try something alittle different remember fish do not read books or read the forums.
