With Rain
On the horizon, well some at least the rivers hopefully will get a top up and a clean out as well, this would be the most rain that we have since March. As I write the South Esk levels are coming up and as long as it rains hard and long in the head waters this is good news, fingers crossed for the North Esk as well. All this does high light the fact that we need to start working on locking water in to our hills again, so we can have a gentle spate and not a one day wonder. This topic as I am sure you are all aware is a complex and emotive issuse, not one for the fishing report.
Last Week
Was still a tough week on the rivers, Kinnaber North Esk had two salmon and a grisle, on a size 14 Gold Bodied Willie Gunn and the Newsome party lost a further three fish. At Stracathro Gary Chambers and his party caught six sea trout in an evening session, no doubt they would have be using Dark Mackerels the dressing can be found in last weeks report 13th-18th June .Both Kinnaird and Finavon South Esk where picking away at the sea trout, Inshewan South Esk had five sea trout last week all caught on small size 14, 16 Stoat Tails and similar patterns. As is for the time of year those that can fish late and into the dark are catching fish, they are there but as ever they are proving difficult to catch.
Neil’s Week Ahead.
Well lets hope that the forecast rings true and puts some much needed water into the river. If this is the case the rivers will have some colour to them and a little hight. Try a Allys shrimp or one of its many variants when the water is dropping. If you happen to be on the river and you have big water (big IF) fish close to the bank with a sink tip and keep your cast short, you will be amazed how close to the bank the fish will lie. However if the rives stay the same, small flies long leaders and the usual low water tactics. If you are out after Sea Trout in the evening small flies ie; Stoats Tails, Dark Mackeral and when darkness falls lardge muddlers or anything that will make a wake.
