The water

Was up and down like a yo yo, with big tides rain, throw in an equinox for good measure and all this made fishing last week a little tricky to say the least. A few fish were caught, but alas only a handful nothing compaired to the previous week. Top beat was Pert N.E with 4 salmon Mr C Barr caught 2 8lb springers on a Monkey from the Boat Pool,  Mr C McKerry a 10lb springer from lower Bridges on an Orange Flame Thrower. Lastly Mr S Cuzir again with a 10lb springer from the Boat Pool on the old faithfull Cascade. Still on the North Esk Balmakewan had one springer at 6lbs caught by Mr G Turner on a Monkey fly tied by CK Flies. Next on the North Esk is Canterland with again one springer at 5lbs. No news of any thing coming from the South Esk and I can asure you it was not through lack of effort. On Saturday the rivers had settled down and both where finning off well.  In the afternoon certainly at Inshewan fish were seen running through, they were also following the fly on a number of occasions this was most infuriating especially as none conected, that is salmon fishing!

Note: If any of the angling clubs or anyone else that has anything to report on the North or South Esk please get in touch via email with your catches and stories. The more we can show what is being caught on our rivers paints a good picture.

Thank you.

Week Ahead

With the clocks now on summer time hopefully the rivers will start to look a little more settled and warmer. Time to take off the heavy sinkers and move on to slow and maybe an intermediate, also try moving away from the ham fisted skagit to a lighter scandi and longer leaders and smaller flies. I feel that we all have a tendency to fish with larger flies than we need to, especially ture for the South Esk. It is always difficult to recommend flies but here we go. Tosh, Willie Gunn in any shape or form, Cascade and one from the borders a Gledswood. I find also less is more, take what you need to the river and concerntrate on fishing. If it does not fit into you pocket leave it behind.

Lastly I should say thank you to the ghillies and guests who send the photographs to me, with out them the report would not be complete and certainly not as colourful!!
