The Last Week

Both rivers were up and down at the begining of the week, settling down toward the end and a perfect day on the last day which was the Monday, which I have inclued in this report. The largest fish last week was caught at  Pert was 25lbs by Mr W Crawford from Ayrshire from the Upper Weir pool. Across the river at Balmakewan they had 4 salmon for their week, plus a sea trout on the Monday. Mostly fishing deep and close to the banks all caught on flies with a touch of red. Gallery and Canterlanted had a brace of salmon each under the 10lbs mark, on from Canterland was a very clean fish for the time of year. The next biggest fish came from Stracathro at 16lbs plus they had three sea trout. The sea trout should have finished spawning by now the weather being the way it is I am sure that this is not the case.  On the South Esk which was very quite last week with only Finavon Castle Water and Inshewan putting in any returns, Finavon had 2 sea trout to finish of with and Inshewan 4 salmon, 1 sea trout.

It has been a hard season with drought  a poor  grilse run, the sea trout have been pretty good and still being caught right up to end.

Note: If any of the angling clubs or anyone else that has anything to report on the North or South Esk please get in touch via email with your catches and stories. The more we can show what is being caught on our rivers paints a good picture.

Thank you.

Week Ahead

Start getting ready for next season, clean those lines and store them loose over the winter. One can service your reels yourself, if they need spares there is plenty of time. Repair waders and boots plus make sure that were you store them is mouse proof. Tie lots of your favourite flies, I almost forgot book your fishing on the North or South Esk for next year. I remember an anogram from my days in the Royal Scots, it involed alot of “P’s”,  P… Poor Prepartion equals P… Poor Performance! Sort your kit out now not the day before you go fishing and I am sure you will be rewarded.  I look forward to next season, the opening day on Thursday 16th Feburay will be held on the North Esk ,beat to be decided I will let you all know so that if you are not fishing you can come along.
