A Tough Week

Last week on the rivers with the levels sitting at about 3-4 inches, so no tails of monster salmon and epic battles this week I am afraid. There were alot of anglers out trying their best to catch a springer, but as you are all well aware spring fishing for salmon is never easy at the best of times. So hat’s of to all of you who put in the hard yards in at this time of year, and by the looks of it next week is going to be hard work more on that later. The reports coming of the river last week are that the run of spring salmon has slowed down and the the fish that are there are just not interested, a few knocks and follows is all that has happened. All this is has not been helped by the fact the the rivers are low and cold about 4-5c coupled with bright sunshine, not ideal fishing weather but just fantastic to be out on the rivers, I think you would all agree? So other than waffling on about this and that, I will wish you all the best of luck for the coming week keep put the hours in and you will be rewarded.

Note: If any of the angling clubs or anyone else that has anything to report on the North or South Esk please get in touch via email with your catches and stories. The more we can show what is being caught on our rivers paints a good picture.

Thank you.

Week Ahead

It will be a tough nut to crack this week, with air and river tempertures falling (at time of writing North Esk at Gallery is 3c) with no chance of rain until the weekend or possibly next week, you are going to have to dig deep and stay positive the fish are there you will just have to put that fly right on their nose. Again if you can take the water temperture do it will pay off, have a look at the photograph of “Fly Size and Water Temperture When Salmon took the Fly”. Flies, lines, rods and reels all come and go with the must have’s the temperture and size? it’s the one thing that never changes. Get that right and your half way there to catching a springer. As for flies think big for the cold water but go down a size for low water, so think in the 2.5-3 inch bracket. Willie Gunn Snelda, Gold Body Willie Gunn on a brass or copper tube and the good old black and Yellow tube again in brass or copper, all heavy to get those flies down. If you have some  larger waddingtonds give them a swim. Old school I know but they still have thier place. Enjoy some proper spring fishing at last when it’s cold snowing and biting North winds, a dram at lunch warm the paws in front of the wood burner. Wrap up warm ladies and Gentleman it’s cold outside!

Lastly I should say thank you to the ghillies and guests who send the photographs to me, with out them the report would not be complete and certainly not as colourful!!
