A Close Encounter, a Not-So-Naive Highlander and a Stracathro Surprise

River levels were high at the beginning of the week but had largely settled by Tuesday evening, bringing decent fishing conditions across the Esk rivers.

Edzell recorded its first two salmon of the season this week, both caught by Mungo Ingleby on Wednesday 4th March. The first came from the Big Gannochy Pool (8 lbs), followed by a second fish from Bulwalk (7 lbs). Plenty of fish sightings were reported from the beat, together with what was described as “a close encounter.”

An unexpected sea trout was caught in Stracathro’s Otter Pool on Tuesday 3rd March by Roger Brook (1.5 lbs). On Wednesday 4th March, Andrew Arnott landed a 6.6 lb salmon from Weir Pool on a Cascade. Later in the week, on Saturday 7th March, Gee Smith caught a 10 lb salmon from Upper Weir Pool on a Green Highlander.

Pert reported three salmon for the week. Mr Candlon landed a 10 lb salmon on Monday in Luther Pool using an Ally Shrimp Temple Dog. On Thursday, Mr D Scott caught a 9 lb salmon in Boat Pool. On Friday, Mstr F Wright landed an 11 lb salmon from Upper Stobb Pool.

The Week Ahead (9th – 14th March 2026)

The week will begin with settled conditions before low pressure moves in on Wednesday, bringing strong winds. Rain is expected on Thursday, with wintry showers likely on Friday.

Daytime temperatures are forecast to reach highs of 8–11°C (46.4–51.8°F), with overnight lows ranging from 0–6°C (32–42.8°F).
