Well last week

Was a warm one to say the the least and as expected there was not alot of action on the rivers. As far as I know no fish where caught on the South Esk last week with a few beats not fished at all due to the warm and low water. I did take the river temperture in several locations last week on the North and South Esk, the average working out at 18c which is not suprising given the weather we are having. The North did manage to catch a few fish with Kinnaber reporting 11 salmon/grisle, Morphie as well had 5 grilse. Gallery caught 4 sea trout , with the fishing happening between 1o.00pm – 4.00am, the biggest at 3 lbs coming to Jeremy Corke at 1.00am in the morning.

Week Ahead

Well as I right the South Esk is 2ft and rising at Inshewan, so hopefully it will continue and give the river a good wash out plus get the fish moving. The North on the other hand has only come up 3 inches, fingers crossed it gets more of a rise in water. So as far as fishing goes on the North Esk, still small flies and the Collie Dog also try a Red Francisin the smaller sizes. With a rise in water on the South Esk, coloured water will play apart in fly choice. Allys Shrimp with a copper body or try a Red Allys both of which I find very good in coloued water, plus another favourite the  Cascasde. I hear you yawn, they are popular for a very reason they work. Also some of the old shrimp patterns work well, The Bann Special Shrimp, Curry’s Red Shrimp. If the water is high a slow sink tip or intermerdiate tip should be sufficient.

Lastly I should say thank you to the ghillies and guests who send the photographs to me, with out them the report would not be complete and certainly not as colourful!!
